Sledgehammer

Director: Stephen R. Johnson
Year: 1986
The combination of stop motion, pixilation, and claymation used in “Sledgehammer” was simply groundbreaking. Always ranking high on “best of” lists, it’s still amazing today and also happens to be the most-played video in MTV history.

Take on Me

Director: Steve Barron
Year: 1985
Cute girl gets pulled into an animated comic book world, falls in love with the lead singer, and they live happily ever after? Sounds ridiculous, but “Take on Me” has become one of the most iconic music videos of the 80s, the decade of the music video. The video is a masterful blend of rotoscoping and live action used to tell a complete, cheesy love story in 3 minutes.

Do the Evolution

Director: Kevin Altieri and Todd McFarlane
Year: 1998
The top 3 were tough to decide, but “Do the Evolution” has stood the test of time and takes #1. This amazing video chronicles the history of human civilization at breakneck speed. Once you process this sensory overload, you’re presented with some powerful messages about the nature of man and the state of the world. If that’s all a little too heavy for you, just enjoy the brilliant animation.
