Things I Learned from Watching Hard Boiled

With the recent release of the Hard Boiled Ultimate Edition and the upcoming release of Stranglehold, it’s an excellent time to go over the important things we’ve learned from watching Hard Boiled. So many valuable life lessons and insights can be gained from John Woo’s tale of bullets, loyalty, honor, and more bullets.

  • That was hilarious, just one problem: people do indeed die from John Woo’s mexican stand-offs. In “Face Off”, 1997 staring John Travolta and Nicholas Cage, three people die (out of six) as a result of a mexican stand-off, one of them being a main character. You might want to change the fourth rule from “nobody ever” to “nobody in this movie”.

  • I’ve been a fan of the John Woo movies since I saw “The Killer” in 1989 at the now-defunct Mission Drive-In. What you touched on is the best of this amazing movie. Even if you took out the dialogue, you can still understand it all! Amazing! ~ Jaime (el santo gordo)

  • When Mad Dog wanted to spare the patients, over-the-top crime boss Johnny Wong just had to wipe them out. Mad Dog’s sense of honor kicked in and he redeemed himself by trying to stop Johnny. The problem was he ran out of bullets (in a John Woo movie?!) and that cheap bastard Johnny killed him.
