This animation for Kraftwerk's "Autobahn" was done long before the days of MTV and might not technically be considered a music video. At any rate, it's pretty cool and a bit trippy.

The Gorillaz were not considered for this list because well... they're an animated band so all their videos are animated. "19-2000" has a nice blend of 2D and 3D animation.

The fuck? Do the Evolution by Pearl Jam? All the other videos got heavy rotation, but I have not seen DTE since the day it came out since. Not even the next day had DTE on the TV. As for Land Of Confusion, its less of an attack on world leaders than it is a cliched fest around naive notions of power. I mean, come on, he hits the fat guy and money comes out. I guess Pearl Jam likes treating their fans as children with such simplicity.

Great list! I have been teaching animation history here in Vancouver for 12 years and I've decided to include 3 hours of classtime just on music videos. Your site is a great primer on today's animated music videos. Considering the history of animation the earliest films were all musically driven, think of Disney's "Silly Symphonies" Warner's "Merry Melodies" and all the Betty Boop's with it's Cab Calloway & Louis Armstrong soundtracks. Fantasia, Yellow Submarine, Pink Floyd's "The Wall", The Rolling Stones' "Harlem Shuffle", etc. etc. Your site really highlights the best the in today's history of animation. Thanks for the research.

i've been searching for a song/music video. electronica genre, the video was done in cutout animation style (has a girl and a guy with a french beret, i think). the song was in French or some French phrases being repeated over and over again between a female and male voice(i think the guy's asking something, but the girl says "no"). has a nice beat. it's been years, i saw it on muchmusic around the turn of the century. help please

I´m looking for an animated music video. This is my recollection of it.
The setting is a hamburger restaurant. Upp front the kids are flipping burgers and the boss is around flashing either a gold ring or a gold tooth. Down in the basement there are cows hooked up to television system that makes them believe that they are gracing around on a field. But really they are just walking on a treadmill and are being sliced up into hamburgers as alive. Eventually something happens to the television system and the cows becomes aware of whats going on, and attacks the owner.
I can´t really recall the music but i believe it was something electronic.

Hey Guys...since everyone is looking for animated music videos- i thought i might ask if anyone could help me with mine:
I'll try my best to describe it:
-It's a house/electronica track and was released around 2001-2002 or 2003 even.
-It's a black and white 2-d animation.
-The video has this miniature man with a big head that looks like a hypnosis spiral dial or an eye.
-He's running away from the edge of the screen or some monster (can't really remember what it was..but he was running)
-The song itself has these Bruce Lee's Game of Death/James Bond theme-like trumpets and flutes that cut into the beats rapidly and frequently (that's what attracted me to the song itself).
-While the music plays, there's some mumbling that goes along with the instrumentals. It sounds like someone inhaled helium, says something twice and then says a complete sentence (with the helium voice).
-at the end of the video, the mini-man falls into something and gets stuck and he struggles to get free.
I'd really appreciate it if anyone could help me get the name of this track. I have every other one from that time period that i liked. Apart from this one- i had no idea of the name or artist of the track. This video was the only clue and i've been searching for years...thanks

I'm looking for a video--its whole set-up was like a puppet show made from cardboard and paper. The curtain would open and close over different scenes as the music played. I seem to remember a cartoon airplanes dropping bombs at one point.

If we're strictly talking about music videos of the kind created since the 80's for MTV/Much Music (thus, excluding masterpieces like Fantasia and Silly Symphonies mentioned above), I have to agree with those who mentioned Radiohead's "Paranoid Android" and Queens of the Stone Age's "Go With the Flow". I completely disagree with the person who feels the Gorillaz vids deserve to be on the list before A-Ha. "Take on Me" was an important video in the history of the genre's development and was quite innovative and influential. That said, I feel you've forgotten a major: "Girlfriend" by Matthew Sweet. He used the anime movie "Space Adventure Cobra" to awesome effect!

It's about the life of a couple: starts with the guy at the bus stop, with a heart diagram on top of him saying love level 10%, then he meets a girl, love diagram goes up 15%, they go on a date, heart %goes up, etc, they make, lov,e get married, love reaches 100%, then they get bored, they don't make love anymore love levels go down, then she cheats on him etc and he leaves. This is a really neat forum! I have an animated video I am trying to find myself. The song sounded very much like the piano intro of Dido's "thank-you" all throughout the song. The video was simply animated with like a cream colored background and people drawn in black. I think the video came out some time between 1993 to 1995. I remember an old one too, the band was singing in the midde of an animation jungle(band members are real), Jungle was cute and shiny, rabbits and other animals comes to music then suddenly ambiance changes, weather gets dark, animals run away from an unknown predator, some rabbits die then weather becomes light again...

I've been looking for years for this video I saw on MTV/TMF in Europe mid-90s:
There's a couple clay-like crows singing in a cabana style setting. There's a female bird as well. The music reminds me a lot of Sublime.
Lyrics are something along the lines of "Keep keep coming, that is it girl woah oh oh." It's been 15 years, memories might be fuzzy ;)
Back in the mid 90s the clip starts of with a man lying in his bed he wakes to see an alien (little glowing white creature) standing on the end of his bed. He mouth's some swear words and jumps out his window, runs into the street. He then see's there's heap of them and there touching people and turning them into tree's he freezes and one sneaks up behind him and touches him then he starts turning into a tree his feet turn into roots and he can't move. At the end of the clip the tree flowers grows fruit and the fruit falls to the ground and a creature hatches from it and runs of. Hey Guys…since everyone is looking for animated music videos- i thought i might ask if anyone could help me with mine:
I’ll try my best to describe it:
-It’s a house/electronica track and was released around 2001-2002 or 2003 even.
-It’s a black and white 2-d animation.
-The video has this miniature man with a big head that looks like a hypnosis spiral dial or an eye.
-He’s running away from the edge of the screen or some monster (can’t really remember what it was..but he was running)
-The song itself has these Bruce Lee’s Game of Death/James Bond theme-like trumpets and flutes that cut into the beats rapidly and frequently (that’s what attracted me to the song itself).
-While the music plays, there’s some mumbling that goes along with the instrumentals. It sounds like someone inhaled helium, says something twice and then says a complete sentence (with the helium voice).
-at the end of the video, the mini-man falls into something and gets stuck and he struggles to get free.
I’d really appreciate it if anyone could help me get the name of this track. I have every other one from that time period that i liked. Apart from this one- i had no idea of the name or artist of the track. This video was the only clue and i’ve been searching for years…thanks

the vid I'm looking for, I saw in Europe, it was in French, with English subs translating the song. The song had a nice melody and it was a guy talking/singing, the context of the song was that this is the future, and the children now have three eyes, and they say you're ugly because you don't look like them...
The video was animated, and it was showing a girl-child playing in the nature, rolling around in the grass, but in the end the timer rings, and she has to come out of this room that is made to look like it's a park or something, and outside it are other children waiting in line to play in there.
Only saw this vid once, but it stuck in my head, especially because of the combination of words and graphics, plus it had a nice tune.

I’d given up all hope on finding this song till I saw this thread, so I’ll give it a shot. I’m looking for a video that starts off with a man (not a cartoon), possibly the lead singer, and he’s in a house and is miniature and is dancing with a woman. The woman actually is the man, just wearing a dress.. so it’s like a mini man dancing with himself as a woman. Then it switches to a cartoon with I think gypsy looking people singing and dancing and clapping. Near the end, there’s a cartoon band singing the song on stage. I also kind of remember a cartoon dog like a bloodhound and possibly the word “Timbucktoo” sung in the song. It appeared on my cable’s on-demand between 2003-2005 and was under the “soundtracks” category, so I think its from a movie. I need this song! Thanks!

Hi, im going crazy trying to find an animated music vid/song. I saw it once on MTV about 2005 - style was indi pop very possibly euro-pop, sung in english but with maybe icelandic accent. Vid was animated in background with the real singer (young women long dark hair, cute looking, maybe glasses) in foreground also playing guitar (no other band members). 2002-2003 animated video that i saw in the middle east on satelite tv. All i remember is that the main character smacks someone in the head with a club or something and he falls into a grave that was originally intended for the main character. The person singing the song sounds like a kid but the beat and melody have some serious hooks. i only saw it like twice but i still remember the melody. I know this is very vague but it's been bugging me for a while. I think the artist's name was little something. little mack or lil.... i dunno. help!!

The video is as follows: there's a car speeding through a town who then starts to get chased by police cars then the police notice there's a pregnant woman on board and end up escorting her to the hospital. The video ends with something like "It's A Boy" written on screen.
Now Here's the catch everything on this video is text. A car in the movie isn't a car, rather the letters CAR in the shape of a car. Everything is in this fashion. A building is just the letters BUILDING in the form of one a cop is the letters COP in the shape of a person and so on.... any idea????

I've been looking for two animated music videos for years, and I figured this would be a great place to ask if anyone knows the names of the videos.
I don't remember the songs because I was very young, but in the 90s I remember watching these music videos on either vh1 or mtv with my dad. One was with a bunch of mannequins that came to life at night in a music store and played all the instruments.
The other video was with a record store and a little surfing guy and I think it was called pineapple records or something like that... But Im not sure on that name.

Hi all. I’m also looking for a music video artist/song name, I’ll describe what I remember. It aired late night on VH1, 2001 or so. It had a really catchy electronica beat, and the bit I saw was a cut-out of a man in a suit & tie, who was placed into a sitting position and then the background, the inside of a subway, slid in from the sides.. the positioning of the figurine-then-sliding of the scenery was a theme of the video. Well, i'm looking for a certain animated video, but a don't remember the artist, the name of the song or the lyrics, i only get to remember some scenes and images. Oscar, I have a picture in my mind but it's difficult to describe. I think the long-legged figures are walking on a round planet, but the thing which sticks in my memory is the weirdness of these strange figures and the way they walk. The music has a relentless walking rhythm and a male singing. It feels kinda lonely yet beautiful. Sorry, I know that's not much help.

I dont know if its the same music video as the one Im after but it sounds similar. The one Im trying to find has a stop motion video of a terminator like robot running down a highway. The song was heavy metal with the chorus; "Im your terminal lover" and I think the next line was "Fighting for the others"?

PLEASE, PLEASE HELP! During summer 2009 in France, a partially animated music video sung by a young woman was on constant loop.I don't remember the artist or the name. All I recall was that it involved a woman singing to man and in the end his car crashes and bursts into flames. This video may have involved rain. It's about a boy who is having dinner at home with his parents, but he refuses to eat his vegetables (i'm not sure but i think they were green peas). Hello, I really need some help looking for an animated/claymation music video from very early 1999/2000 ish. It was featured on MTV regularly and contained a little boy (with large eyes) who leaves home and goes on a journey to another world and meets three monsters. I heard it only once a few years ago, actually saw the video on MTV. I sounded like French but i can't remember the artist or song , the entire video is animated with 'Tintin' cast following a red ribbon in their jeep and the background music is by a female vocalist. I'm looking for an animated music video, indie music, where there is one photo type animation of a baby crawling, then a claymation dog walking, then the dog gets chopped up into slices, the scene goes back to the baby which is now hooked up to wires, then there are hundreds of crawling photo animated babies, then they turn into hundreds of fast food items. I have been searching for a late 90's or early 2000's rock video with a human dressed up like an amine/cosplay/manga character. She had a body of a normal human but wore a "head" of an amine girl/woman. I believe there was some evil mushrooms she was running from. I believe it was the first rock video every to use a cosplay character this way.
I think one of the main lyrics in the chorus was the singer (male) shouting/singing: ......FOLLOW, but not 100% sure. I know it did get a lot of air play on MTV; back when MTV still played music.

Anyone help on this one? Maybe early 90's or so. It's a claymation video with four characters on a floating platform and what looks like a treasure chest in the middle. One character moves and the others have to move too to keep the platform balanced as it sort of balances from the center. One character works out that if he moves a certain way he can knock out the others one by one due to greedily wanting the chest for himself. Ironically when he's the only one left he can't move as his weight on one end of the platform is counterbalanced by the chest at the other end but he's knocked off the other characters and is all alone staring at the chest he can never reach ! Awesome. Need to know who did it and the song please.

I watched it a few years ago on youtube. It's an animated rock music video in only red, white and black colors. In the video a guy wakes up in a house with his girlfriend, she throws stuff at him and he runs outside to smoke a cigarette. He then gives the cigarette to the dog, who promptly dies. After failing to revive the dog, the guy buries him, followed by the dog becoming a zombie and trying to kill the man. He eventually kills the dog with the shovel he uses to bury the dog.

Cant remember a lot but it was like a puppet show, with curtains opening and closing for each scene. It featured a tin robot at the right hand side going through the various acts. At one point an airplane drops bombs on a town I believe.

I think we are looking for the same clip. It's from late 1997 or 98, right? I saw it on Viva TV. The scenes could have been taken from a PC game in Manga style. I am looking for an animated short I saw on Image Union Back in the 1980's. It depicts an astronaut who lands his spaceship on a post-apocalyptic world. He finds his way in full NASA-style moonsuit through the rubble to a location where he presses a button that activates a holographic image of a music ensemble. All I remember from it, that there was a animated DJ, walking in the street during the beat, and at the moment, when the beat had to change, there was something like *clap* *clap* *clap* "Whooo!" at the "Whoo!" moment, he jumped in the air with his fist up high. The next thing you see is him playing on a DJ set. All is animated, except the street where he was walking. That was RL. I hope someone knows it...

I can´t remember the artist or name of the song, but if i remember correctly the song was in German language. And video was about a dog who walks and is dressed like man (wears suit) He is kinda crumpy, sad and alone in his life. One day a little white kitten starts to follow him. The dog tries to scare the kitten away but kitten continues following him. Dog kicks the kitten so kitten flies into garbage can. The garbage can gets picked up by the garbage truck. The dog sees that and decides to save the kitten. He runs after truck and jumpsout for the kitten. Kitten jumps out of the truck and lands on his lap - happy end.

I have been on the hunt for this particular video for many years but I have no idea what it is. As it was so long ago, I cannot remember very much about the video except for a few bits and pieces.
- First, I know the video was not a rap or country video.
- I saw it on MTV2 around 2000-2001
- It was an animated music video. I don't remember if there was any shots of the band playing but I don't remember any.
- One of the scenes in the music video was an animated helicopter flying over a city street.
- I remember a car pulling up to the side of a curb and (maybe) a figure stepping out of it?
- I remember there was a scene in a diner. This is what I remember most vividly. Two characters are at the diner counter. One character pushes a plate with a hamburger over to the other person and it shows a zoomed in shot of the plate with the burger on it being slid over. Right after that, the other character slides a green dollar toward the character who slid the burger on plate. Zoomed in shot of the dollar being slid over.
- The characters had very weird looks on their faces. Describe weird? I don't know. Just odd looking in appearance.
I know that isn't much to go on but if anyone can help me figure this out, I will be more than grateful.

It would have been some time around 2002 (I know that’s a long time ago). The video was very delicately animated with curious looking aliens (not scary looking or dark) and a spaceship. Toward the end of the video the spaceship took off and left one of the aliens behind (a very sad ending). Does anyone recall the video or the artist?

There's this song, I think it was around 1990-2005, not entirely sure. It was a jazzy/acapella-like song, but no actual words were sung, more like: ba du dum, bop bop ba di da dum <- something like that haha and it was really catchy. Hello, i've got one animation stuck in my head. It was animated in 3d to some dark rock/alternative music(somewhere around 2000).
Animation was about a mad scientist/doctor without legs, floating on some moving robotic arm, he operated(killed them mostly) on little dolls, one of them got away and was chased by very big robot. That little doll managed to get away and at the end of video he fell in some hole and found other injured dolls around him.
Anyone got some ideas about that?
Sorry, that's pretty much all i remembered.
Or maybe there was a big zeppelin at beginning, that lab was inside it.

I've been looking for ages for a video without success. It's trance/techno/electro from the mid 90's I think.
It's completely computer animated, has an pretty futuristic look and it's about a race. The two oponents (one black, the other on golden or silver) start as motorcycles and somewhat later they transform into fighter jets. I can remeber the motorcycles racing over a bridge over a bay during dusk and the downing sun turns everything into golden light.
That's pretty much everything I can remeber, I hope someone can help me.
There's a Song playing deep in my mind but just the chorus part of it I can only hear. However, I do remember the video which is fully animated and goes like this; A man sits to have his breakfast and goes down the stairs . Flies up in the air, sits on the shoulder of a giant man with beard and Hat . And, again, Flies up above the clouds, there's a castle on the cloud in which he then gets in just to have a fight against a GIANT RAT or something . Defeat the Giant . He stops at a channel where he sees the band represented by paper doll versions of themselves playing. He gets up and walks up to the tv and ends up walking through the tv. When he crosses that side it appears the band is playing in a cemetery or graveyard type thing. I also remember a carriage pulled by a horse I think. At the end of the video he meets a girl voodoo doll and they go back through the tv and sit on the couch and watch tv together.

Does anyone know the music video I am talking about? I would imagine it's from the last twenty years. It is animated, as in drawn, and shows some characters in a little town going about their daily business, some of them are arguing, some of them are in love, one of them chucks her partner's clothes out of the window. There is also a little dog and a part where he bites someone. The song, as far as I remember, is called '----- day' (the lines represent a word I can't remember, it's something like regular or routine) and it's very instrumental with little bits of guitar and a good beat. - if I remember correctly, it starts with a baby girl whose dad left, she grows up, her mother dies, she is depressed and is the only character looking different from the others (pedestrians and stuff). Then she finds someone looking like her (i.e depressed) singing at a bar, they fall in love and that should be the end.
Kind of a tear jerker but I want to watch it again, I don't remember the music but it was good (pop or rock maybe?)...

I've been looking for this music video forever. I saw it when I was in college. Its animated in a very similar style to Royksopp - Remind Me. However this music video is about a guy who meets a girl at a concert. They go back to his place and theres a bit where he opens up a condom and then theres a subway going through a tunnel as a euphemism. The music video ends with the guy looking at another girl and the girl he's with is angry and leaves him. Any ideas?
